Drilling work for the sixth well in the SWM project München-Schäftlarnstraße began on 14 November 2019. The last of a total of six wells is heading northwest and is expected to reach a drilling distance of approx. 4.5 km at final depth.
The fifth well (Th5), which was successfully drilled from July to September 2019, was drilled quite a distance from the drilling site in a NNW direction and enters the Malm reservoir at a distance of approx. 2.0 - 2.7 km from the starting point in the Schwanthalerhöhe district between Theresienwiese and Landsberger Straße. The tests on the Th5 well showed that the Th5 is not only the most productive of the wells drilled to date, but is also one of the most productive geothermal wells in the molasse basin. Production and injection rates of over 150 l/s can be expected for the Th5 in long-term operation.
After completion of the test work on the Th5, the drilling rig was initially moved back to the existing Th4 well. In the course of October 2019, a fiber optic cable was successfully installed to the final depth for research purposes, for the first time in the molasse basin and has since been supplying data in real time from the reservoir. The installation and use of the fiber optic cable are part of a research project that is being scientifically supported by the Technical University of Munich (TUM).
