Successful Allach Th1 well

Work on the first geothermal well (Allach Th1) at the main plant of aircraft turbine developer MTU Aero Engines AG in the north of Munich, which began at the end of January 2024, has been successfully completed. With a drilling distance of 2,650 m, the south-facing borehole reached its final depth in the Malm after just under two months of drilling on 18 March. The total mud losses during the entire drilling in the Malm section were already an initial indication of favourable hydraulic conditions.
During the short-term pumping tests of the past two weeks, the exploratory expectations with regard to temperature and filling were confirmed. The maximum pumping rate during the tests was restricted to 120 l/s due to limited discharge rates. With a productivity index (PI) of over 50 l/s/bar at approx. 120 l/s and steady-state conditions, the well is one of the best Malm wells in the Molasse Basin from a hydraulic point of view. The production temperature during subsequent operation is expected to be around 70°C. With this well, the very good hydraulic properties of the Malm thermal water reservoir have now been demonstrated for the first time for the north-west of Munich (and at the project site of the MTU plant in Munich-Allach).
In the coming days, the drilling rig will be skidded (moved) to the second drilling location. Drilling of the second well is scheduled to start in mid-April.
