Hydrogeology and Balneology

Hydrogeology focuses on the development, utilization and protection of ground water based on geological, geophysical, hydraulic and hydrochemical testing methods. Information about the hydrogeological characteristics of the underground can be obtained from drilling operations, spring sources and mining activities (galleries, tunnels). The water-permeability of the underground plays an important role with regard to the movement of available quantities of ground water and the storage capacity of the underground. On the one hand, the chemical composition of the ground water is characterized by the quality of the surrounding soil/rock, on the other hand human-introduced substances make changing and at times contaminating impacts.

Balneology teaches the utilization of natural remedies that are tied to health resorts (healing waters, brines, thermal waters, remedial gases, remedial peloids). In addition to balneotherapy (study of therapeutic application) this also includes balneology technices, balneochemistry, balneophysics (analytics) and the study of geological conditions as part of hydrogeology.
